The group’s research program aims to advance understanding of the physiological bases of grain yield and quality in major temperate crops across diverse environmental conditions and grain production systems, primarily in the Mediterranean cropping lands of the Ebro Valley, and more broadly across a wide range of environmental conditions in major grain production areas of the world, often through collaboration with other research groups or joint supervision of postgraduate students.
Research focuses primarily at the crop level under field conditions, with occasional studies at lower or higher levels of organization under more controlled settings. This work seeks to improve knowledge of the ecophysiological determinants of grain yield and quality to support genetic and management improvements for greater productivity and sustainability. Research is frequently conducted in collaboration with breeders and farmers and focuses mainly on wheat and barley, with occasional work on oilseed rape, soybean, sunflower, and maize.
